Radioactive Beam Production (RBP)

Core competencies:

Radioactive ion beam and radionuclide production, target materials, ISOL target and ion-source units, isotope mass separation, radioactive-source handling and operation in Type A laboratory environments.

Core responsibilities:

• Develop, produce, quality-control and operate target and ion-source units for ISOLDE and MEDICIS.
• Manage the full ISOL target lifecycle, from material development and production through operation, dismantling, waste packaging and preparation for disposal.
• Operate and develop the associated laboratories, hot cells, pump stands, frontends, separators and beam-characterisation equipment.
• Provide expertise in target materials, ion sources, isotope mass separators and manipulation of open radioactive sources.

Projects and Assigned Responsibilities:

Project / programme	Assigned responsibility
ISOLDE operations and upgrades	Produce and operate target and ion-source units; manage target lifecycle, Type A laboratories, hot cells for target dismantling, HRS and GPS frontends systems, Offline 1 and Offline 2 frontends, tape station hardware and related upgrades.
MEDICIS	Produce and operate target and ion-source units; operate the online system and the associated offline mass separator, frontends and associated infrastructure.
Target and Ion Source Development	Jointly lead development with LPS, covering target materials, ion sources and beam-development needs.
Target lifecycle sustainability	Develop reoxidation, waste-reduction and lifecycle measures for uranium, thorium and other target materials.
