Beam Intercepting Devices Engineering (BDE)

Core competencies:
Engineering of primary beam-intercepting devices, including collimators, targets, beam dumps, absorbers, masks, stoppers, slits, scrapers, crystal-based devices, focusing magnetic horns and associated equipment.
Core responsibilities:
- Act as equipment owner and manage the full lifecycle of primary beam-intercepting devices.
- Deliver conceptual and detailed design, thermo-mechanical assessment, materials and cooling development, manufacturing follow-up, installation, testing, maintenance and upgrade.
- Provide operational support, expert interventions and design improvements based on operational experience.
- Develop remote-handling solutions and manage radioactive-device waste packaging with the relevant HSE teams.
- Operate the Group’s mechanical workshop and Concept Development Office for prototyping, tooling, assembly and exploratory design.
- Ensure the safe, compliant and sustainable lifecycle of beam-intercepting devices and Section’s workshops through engineering and technical excellence, risk management and ALARA considerations for design and maintenance.
Projects and Assigned Responsibilities:
| Project / programme | Assigned responsibility |
| HL-LHC | Deliver assigned collimators, masks and beam dumps, including design, manufacturing follow-up, installation readiness and lifecycle support. |
| HI-ECN3 and NA-CONS | Deliver assigned beam-intercepting devices, including P42 dump, TCC2 beam stoppers, TT20 TED, TCSC and TCC2 target station systems. Lead the development of the HI-ECN3 He-cooled W target. |
| LS3 device portfolio | Manage lifecycle of all primary beam-intercepting devices scheduled for installation during LS3, including ACC-CONS. |
| FCC-ee studies | Develop conceptual designs for required beam-intercepting devices (e.g. collimators, lepton dumps, beamstrahlung absorbers, MDI masks/absorbers/collimators, etc.) and shielding assemblies in close collaboration with BMP for both the collider and injectors. |
| DECRYCE | Design, procure and assemble crystal-bender systems for beam manipulation, collimation and loss reduction purposes. |
| Beam-intercepting device R&D | Develop materials, cooling, remote handling and engineering solutions for future functional requirements. |
| Workshop and CDO | Maintain and operate the main Group mechanical workshops in building 927 & 867, together with the Group Concept Development Office. |
