SY-STI Group mandate

Core competencies:

The SY-STI Group provides CERN with integrated expertise in beam-intercepting devices and target systems, beam-matter interaction physics, radiation transport and radiation effects on electronics and materials, radioactive ion beam production, nuclear engineering, and laser systems and pulsed particle sources.

Core responsibilities:

• Own and manage the lifecycle of CERN primary beam-intercepting devices and target systems, from concept and design to operation support, maintenance, upgrade, dismantling and waste packaging.
• Provide beam-matter interaction studies, FLUKA Monte Carlo radiation transport code development and applications and transversal physics support for accelerator operation and future facilities, including machine protection, collimation, shielding, radiation levels, experiment backgrounds and radiation effects in electronics and equipment.
• Develop, produce and operate target and ion-source systems for radioactive ion beam and radionuclide production and separation, including the associated laboratories, frontends and lifecycle activities.
• Develop, operate and maintain laser systems, optical beam lines, photoinjector systems, photocathodes and pulsed particle-source technologies.
• Coordinate the technical operation and lifecycle of target areas and associated infrastructure under Group responsibility, and provide nuclear engineering, project management and safety support.
• Lead the safe, compliant and sustainable delivery and operation of the Group’s facilities, equipment and projects by integrating safety, environmental protection, risk management and operational excellence throughout the full lifecycle, in alignment with applicable HSE policies.
